About Our Program
Background
The Purchasing Services Supplier Diversity Program, formally established in 1995, is built upon a successful collaboration between the University and the diversity supplier business community in support of the institution's local community business initiative that was launched in 1986. We understand that the health and vitality of the University of Pennsylvania are inextricably linked to the quality of life in our city and our surrounding neighborhoods.
Since 1995, Penn's total purchasing spend with diversity suppliers is in excess of $709 Million. In our last fiscal year, Penn purchased approximately $75 Million of products and services from qualified diversity suppliers. Diversity supplier spend represented 9% of Penn’s total purchase order spend in FY2009.
We recognize the challenge many diversity suppliers face in attempting to meet the unique business and technology requirements of the University. As you browse our Supplier Diversity Program related sites, you will see compelling evidence of our commitment to assisting qualified diversity suppliers in the engagement process in order to ensure diversity in our supplier base.
Our Key Strategies
Purchasing Services also promotes the development of partnerships between qualified diversity suppliers and major corporations. Current Penn majority-owned strategic suppliers have demonstrated their commitment to Penn and diversity by assisting Purchasing Services in the development and implementation of innovative value-added partnerships with diversity suppliers. Purchasing Services acknowledges support of these initiatives and will offer unique opportunities to those majority suppliers who assist us in our supplier diversity initiatives.
