History of the Penn Marketplace

The Penn Marketplace, the University's private online supplier exchange, was originally launched on January 2, 2002. The Penn Marketplace was created to streamline the buying needs of nearly 1,800 BEN Buys Purchasing System users across 12 schools and 20 business units.

Penn's focus was to provide a buying experience that was easy to use and intuitive, allowing for supplier and manufacturer searches, comparative shopping, views of product images and related information, and cost comparisons. Authorized BEN Buys users are able to access the Penn Marketplace from anywhere and find consistent, up-to-date product and Penn contract pricing information from many of the University's preferred contract suppliers.

The Penn Marketplace also enables major contract suppliers, small businesses, and targeted community, minority and women owned suppliers to market their products and services to the Penn community on a level playing field. It is important to the University's culture and mission - as well as good economics - to find the most effective supplier, regardless of size, and to offer opportunities to all suppliers that can meet the needs of the campus community.
