PhillyCarShare & Penn Partner for a Green Campus

The University's Sole Source Car Sharing Service Contract Supplier

PhillyCarShare, a Philadelphia based nonprofit supplier of community-based car sharing designed to reduce the automobile dependence in the Philadelphia region, is the University's sole source strategic preferred contract supplier of car sharing services.

About the Contract

Travel Services & Procurement Cards and Purchasing Services have partnered with PhillyCarShare to offer an affordable, convenient, and environmentally-friendly way to drive for Penn business. Penn's PhillyCarShare partnership, the largest university car-sharing program in North America, demonstrates Penn's commitment to the environment and the community.

Penn departments are encouraged to use PhillyCarShare for business transportation needs. A business rental is any rental for which Penn is paying directly (e.g. purchasing card) or the driver is paying for the rental and getting reimbursed.

Benefits for Penn Faculty, Staff and Students

Convenience

Dozens of hybrids, Minis, minivans, and more, are available by the hour or day from convenient campus locations. Employees each receive a personal electronic key to all the cars. Driving is easy: book online, hop in, and go!

Green

PhillyCarShare, founded in 2002 by four Penn alumni, has had a positive environmental impact in Philadelphia.

  • 12,810 fewer cars! Members say they would have owned 23,610 cars without PhillyCarShare. Now they own just 10,800.
  • 42% fewer miles driven. That translates to 26 million fewer miles since inception.
  • 4 million miles driven in hybrids that pollute 90% less than conventional vehicles.
  • 1.6 million gallons of gas saved, from driving hybrids and driving less.
  • Former car owners say they're choosing more earth-friendly modes: 40% walk more, 34% ride public transit more, 18% bike more, 13% take taxis more.
  • $90 million annual economic boost for Philadelphia's local economy, as the savings accrued by former car owners get spent locally rather than flowing into the global auto industry.
