About Us

Purchasing Services is a Supply Management department under the auspices of the University's Division of Business Services. Purchasing Services is responsible for appropriately $750 Million of annual direct spend and an additional $300 Million of annual indirect spend leveraged collaboratively with other supply and fulfillment related departments.

A significant portion of spend through Purchasing Services is processed through "actively managed supplier relationships". Our commodity responsibilities include everything from office and technology products, research equipment, supplies and chemicals, capital equipment including office and laboratory furniture, professional services, construction and maintenance items, athletic equipment, to dental and veterinary requirements. We work collaboratively with faculty and staff in business offices and research facilities across the campus, and administrative offices, and our preferred suppliers to oversee the University's procure-to-pay process. We utilize cutting edge eBusiness technologies, innovative supply chain strategies, aggressive contracting and cost containment programs, and utilized local and national collaborative purchasing relationships to leverage the University's buying power. Consistent with the mission of the Division of Business Services, our underlying philosophy is to provide our customers with high quality service and efficient and effective buying methods in a fiscally responsible manner. Being a service provider within the University, Purchasing Services shares Penn's status as a not-for-profit organization and proceeds earned from any supplier partnership support the costs associated with maintaining the operation of the organization.

Purchasing Services is committed to socially responsible purchasing. We support sustainable purchasing and have formal economic inclusion initiatives to ensure that diversity owned and local community businesses have a full and fair opportunity to conduct business at Penn.
